Ingredients
- 1Β½ pounds (680 g) lean ground beef (or half beef, half ground pork)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium head green cabbage (about 2 pounds), chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Β½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 bay leaves
Optional Garnishes
- Fresh parsley, chopped
- Sour cream
- Shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
Instructions
1. Brown the Meat
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the ground beef and onion until the meat is browned and the onion is softened.
- Drain excess grease if necessary.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
2. Make the Sauce
In a bowl, whisk together:
- Crushed tomatoes
- Tomato sauce
- Diced tomatoes
- Beef broth
- Tomato paste
- Brown sugar
- Worcestershire sauce
- Smoked paprika
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Salt and pepper
3. Layer the Crockpot
- Lightly grease the slow cooker.
- Spread one-third of the chopped cabbage in the bottom.
- Add half the browned beef mixture.
- Sprinkle half of the uncooked rice over the beef.
- Pour one-third of the tomato sauce mixture over the layers.
- Repeat with another layer of cabbage, beef, rice, and sauce.
- Finish with the remaining cabbage and the rest of the sauce.
- Tuck the bay leaves into the sauce.
4. Cook
- Low: 6β8 hours
- High: 3β4 hours
The casserole is done when the cabbage is tender and the rice is fully cooked.
5. Finish
- Remove the bay leaves.
- Stir gently to combine all the layers.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Optional Cheesy Version
During the last 20β30 minutes of cooking:
