Ingredients
For the Apple Filling
- 6 large apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the Crisp Topping
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a 9-inch square baking dish.
- Prepare the filling. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice. Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger (if using), vanilla, and salt. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.
- Transfer to the baking dish. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared dish.
- Make the topping. In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Assemble. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples, covering them completely.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Cool for 10–15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to thicken.
