Ingredients
- 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter
- 8 oz (225 g) semisweet chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (220 g) packed light brown sugar
- 4 large eggs, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (45 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)
- 1 cup (170 g) milk chocolate chunks or chips
- ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×9-inch (23×23 cm) baking pan with parchment paper.
- Melt the butter and semisweet chocolate together in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in the microwave in short bursts, stirring until smooth. Let cool for about 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gradually whisk the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture.
- Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and espresso powder (if using). Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until combined.
- Fold in the milk chocolate chunks and nuts, if using.
- Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).
- Cool completely in the pan before lifting out and cutting into squares.
