The dishwasher tablet trick for oven cleaning is real, but it’s a targeted hack, not a full oven deep-clean. Here’s exactly how to use it safely and what to expect.
What It Actually Cleans Well
-
The inner glass door (greasy film, brown stains)
-
Smooth enamel surfaces (oven floor, sides) if not heavily baked-on
-
Removable metal racks (less effective; see notes below)
What You’ll Need
-
1 standard dishwasher tablet (powder-based works best; liquid gel packs are useless here)
-
A small bowl of warm water
-
Rubber gloves (the detergent is harsh on skin)
-
Microfiber cloths or non-scratch sponges
-
Clean water for rinsing
Step-by-Step: Cleaning the Oven Glass
-
Warm the glass slightly (not hot). Run the oven at 50°C/120°F for 2–3 minutes, or wipe with a warm damp cloth. You should be able to touch it comfortably. Too hot and the tablet melts into a sticky mess.
-
Dip the tablet briefly in warm water so the surface begins to soften.
-
Scrub in small circles over the greasy glass. The tablet will start to dissolve and release its cleaning agents. Focus on one section at a time. You’ll feel a slight grittiness — that’s the tablet doing the work.
-
Wipe away residue immediately with a damp microfiber cloth. Do not let it dry on the glass, or you’ll get stubborn white streaks.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clean water at least twice. Any leftover detergent will release a chemical smell and possibly smoke faintly the next time you heat the oven.
-
Buff dry with a clean cloth.
What About the Oven Racks?
You can use a dishwasher tablet to scrub racks, but it’s labor-intensive. A better method:
-
In a dishwasher: If racks fit, run them on a heavy cycle with a dishwasher tablet. They’ll come out surprisingly clean.
-
In a bathtub: Lay racks on an old towel, fill with hot water, drop in 2 dishwasher tablets, and soak overnight. Scrub gently in the morning, then rinse.
Where You Should NOT Use It
-
Self-cleaning oven linings (catalytic liners) — you’ll ruin the porous coating.
-
Uncoated aluminum or damaged surfaces — the alkaline tablet can cause discoloration.
-
Heavily burnt, carbonised interiors — you need a proper oven cleaner or baking soda paste for that.
Honest Outcome
Videos showing a sparkling oven after 30 seconds of rubbing are misleading. It works, but you’ll need to scrub, rinse obsessively, and accept it’s best for maintenance cleans, not neglected ovens. If your oven hasn’t been cleaned in a year, this alone won’t cut it.
Let me know if you’d like the heavy-duty, no-fume baking-soda-and-vinegar method for a full oven overhaul — it’s gentler and surprisingly effective.
